Work and Play 2011

Welcome to 2011.  Silchester celebrated with a splendid Bollywood night in the Calleva and with the now traditional New Year visit by the Kennet Morris Men.

Something a little different - have a look at the activities for March 2011 to see what has been going on during the past month!

Mina the donkey, the Second Augustan Legion, Bishop Peter and  glorious weather Palm Sunday 2011 was a great experience for the good-sized crowd that joined in!

Basing Clog Morris and their guests the Shinfield Shamblers  dancing at the Calleva.

14 May 2011 - Fun Run time again!   Set-up and supporting organisation; followed by runners getting ready, starting and around the course and finally  finishers as they cross the line and the awards presented by Canon Ken Batt.  Thanks to Paul’s contribution we have improved photo coverage this year.

Rogation Sunday, blessing the crops and tradition of ‘Beating the Bounds’ - walking the Parish Boundary, a joint Church and Silchester Association event.  Additional pictures thanks to Howard.

SILCHESTER VILLAGE FETE, 11 June.  Beautiful weather, a great crowd and fun for all!

Steve’s pictures from the Dig Supper held 28 July.

Life in the village carries on while your webmaster has been off on his travels but I made sure to be back for the First Silchester Beer Festival in the Village Hall at the beginning of September - a sell-out evening with a range of real ales and cider accompanied by a bowl of chilli and music by ever-popular Frottage.

The 2011 diggers’ farewell bash managed to find fair weather  for an outside drinks and music evening in the garden at the Calleva, also the scene for Sharon and Simon to celebrate their tenth anniversary in the village.

8 October - Group SAX musical evening in the church, a sell-out concert much appreciated by everyone attending.

Despite weather concerns earlier in the week, 5 November Bonfire Night was a great success with a huge crowd enjoying the bonfire, fireworks and all the supporting essentials including pumpkins, burgers, mulled wine, crazy cakes and a bride in pink wellies!

Rembrance Sunday at the War Memorial - another good turn-out.

Fish was 50 on Tuesday and taken completely by surprise on Saturday evening by a party organised by Sonia, attended by lots of people including some who Fish hadn’t seen for years!

Sunday 27 November saw a huge crowd outside the Calleva for a Christmas market and to join in singing carols after Robin Scott turned on this year’s tree lights.

December and Christmas fast approaching! The children’s Christmas party in the village hall, the Barnardos Toy Run and St Mary’s Christingle Service all took place over the weekend 3/4 December.

Carols in the Calleva - a full house on Monday 19 December.

Christmas Disco in the Village Hall.
